REVIEWING FOR CELBAN

English Language Learning Program

The English Language Learning Program aims to assist internationally educated nurses (IENs) to pass the CELBAN, one of the requirements to get registered with BCCNM. Language learning assessors will guide IENs in their aspirations of becoming confident and effective communicators in the English language as they interact with people across the province.

Philippine-trained nurses who wish to practice their nursing profession in British Columbia, Canada are encouraged to get themselves familiar with the requirements of the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.

We are looking for the first 15 participants of this online training. This 6-week program cycle will start on April 18 and run until May 27, 2022. The cost-recovery fee for the entire program is $199 per participant. A sliding scale negotiated by income level is available, please contact us at languageprograms@npc3.ca for more information.

OBJECTIVE

The Philippine-trained nurses will be able to familiarize themselves with the nature of the required English proficiency tests. Click the links below, and get to know how your competencies and skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing will be tested.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

COURSE NAME: Reviewing for CELBAN (4 Modules)

Day & time: asynchronous

  • This set of modules will give participants the tools for passing the CELBAN with high scores.

  • This course consists of modules on (1) speaking, (2) listening, (3) reading and (4) writing, and provides trainees with tools that enhance their communication skills at the workplace. Through these modules, trainees are motivated to (1) effectively negotiate their roles with fellow communicators; (2) understand and appreciate the unique culture-based interactive skills of every person they meet in their occupations; (3) frequently exercise drills and practice skills in the four macro communication skills; and (4) become confident of their interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.

  • This course draws among trainees their experiential learning in the effective use of their competencies and skills in the delivery of social services. The course provides tools and processes that guide trainees in enhancing and refining their critical thinking skills, intelligences, and interpersonal and intercultural skills as they navigate their roles in various occupations. The course further aims to evaluate trainees’ level of compassion and integrity in their exploration, navigation, facilitation, and engagement competencies as workers.

    After completing this course, the trainees will be able to:

    1) Pass the CELBAN with flying colors (high scores).

    2) Be confident of communicating verbally (oral and written) and nonverbally with people across all sectors, races, genders and colors

    3) Apply advanced practice principles, standards, models and frameworks in a range of professional practice settings

  • 1) The course modules consist of curated CELBAN training workshops and exercises on YouTube; exercises and practice drills.

    2) The language of training is English. Trainees are asked to communicate in English throughout the online sessions.

Dr. Maria Veronica Caparas

Director of Language Programs, Reviewing for CELBAN Trainer

Dr. Vernie finished her bachelor and master’s degrees in Speech Communication at the University of the Philippines, and her doctoral degree in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Alberta in Canada. She taught leadership, management communication, research, social science, written business communication, and speech communication courses to entrepreneurs, development managers, executives, graduate students, and university students in various institutions, including the University of Alberta, Canada, the Asian Institute of Management, the University of the Philippines (as Full Professor), Ateneo de Manila University, and Maryknoll/Miriam College, Philippines (Professorial Lecturer). A consultant for SpeechPower, Philippine Airlines, America OnLine (AOL), Quedancor, ABS-CBN Talent Center, Star City, Maharlika Broadcasting System, and more, Vernie is also a researcher at UBC and a freelance journalist for online and print media.
